About The Fierce Foodie
Prior to entering our sophomore year of college, my friends and I decided that we were ready to make the transition to off-campus housing. With our first ever rental agreements and proposed expenses in tow, we journeyed to our various homes for the summer break prepared for war with the skeptical parents. YES! No more shameful trips to the school cafeteria, no more greasy spoon on-campus diner, no more mediocre $4 pizza runs, no more microwaved baked potatoes, popcorn or ramen noodles. Yep, we were moving up in the world. Unfortunately, as we flicked off the dorm mother and cut up our cafeteria cards, we failed to take the time to find out if any one of the new suitemates could ACTUALLY cook.
As they started to look more and more delectable to me and I noticed one roommate chewing her hair, I decided it was time to get in the kitchen. My mother and father, both excellent cooks, didn’t really allow folks in their domain (a trait that I am not proud to admit I acquired from them), in fact, they bumped heads a lot just having the two of them there. But, we were all fortunate enough to perform sous chef tasks like chopping and rinsing veggies, stirring a pot or two, and preparing the table. Of course, there is no way you can come from that with NOTHING. So, I started COOKING. I drew upon my memory of my mother’s (unwritten) recipes and my father’s rules and cooking points and tried to mimic them to the best of my ability.
Before I knew it, I was known as the go-to party girl for my friends, sorority sisters and fraternity brothers as well as for any other hungry creature lurking around our now very popular apartment. It was hot!! (in a good way, for the people my age and older who have no business using this term, lol). Not so much the partying, but the cooking and planning excited me. Of course, this DID get in the way of some of the studying I should have been doing, hence the run-on above.
I LOVE watching people eat my food and challenging myself to improve my skills. I know people look at me and are like, she’s allllll that AND she can cook, DAMN! : )
I started this blog because I feel that if you learn something, you should share it, Good or Bad. I hate going to dinner parties where the food sucks or office pot-lucks where I can only stand to nibble on my own contribution. Attitude and confidence can get you pretty far in this world and it’s no different in the kitchen.
Forever Fierce,
Zina
